I made a brief trip home for Thanksgiving. In and out, saw a few friends but mainly spent time with the family. While I was home; I made a trip down to see my great grandma and my great grandpa because I hadn’t seen them in a while.

In true great grandparent style, they ushered me in, talked about how I don’t have a boyfriend, and then gave me the run down as to what all my second cousins are up to. What shocked me was when they started telling me about one specific family member.

We’re going to call her Emma because I don’t think she knows that I know this. She just recently turned 16 and got her first job! It’s super exciting for a few reasons, 1, early first jobs can help create a work ethic and 2, she got a sales job.

The grandparents explained that she works are a cute little dress shop in one of PA’s countless small towns. She get’s an hourly wage & a bonus when she makes a dress sale. Let’s break this down a little bit.

I’m Emma, and I go to work and get paid. But if I take the time to learn how to do my job and to do it well, it’s really easy to make a lot more money. So naturally, I’m going to spend time learning how to recommend dresses people will like. I’m going to learn how to build trust and communicate well. I’m going to get comfortable with the concept of selling because the easiest thing I can do to make more many is to do my job well.

I don’t usually have a lot to say about what my second cousins chose to do with their life. However, hearing that Emma was doing amazing at this job actually made me jealous.

She is so much more equipped to handle life because she learned these skills. Now yes, anyone can learn them – you don’t have to have a sales job to learn them. BUT, when there is an incentive behind learning a skill not only do you learn it, you want to master it.

So yes, I think you should have a sales job once in your life. You don’t have to stick with it for forever but stay long enough to master it. The communication, trust building, and learning that come with it are skills most people dream of having. What are you waiting for? Go make it happen!
